I don’t disagree with you about Pokémon, I disagree with the notion that the character Pikachu and the massive global brand that is Pokémon, are the exact same thing. Pikachu as a single character hasn’t reached that level yet. Mario was a multimedia beast back in the day, and that’s why his games continue to break records.

Just because the movie in the early 90s flopped, doesn’t mean it didn’t help expand the brand. The same thing the Mario Movie is doing right now lol. Detective Pikachu (movie) was used to make money and to expand the brand period. Okay so Mario was a household name & did multimedia before Pikachu.Ĭlick to expand.Like I said, Pikachu doesn’t equal Pokémon at all. Pokemon Gold / Silver |GameBoy/GameBoy Color/Super GameBoy| (Nintendo) - 80.000 / 5.110.000 Gold / Silver continues to hold 1st spot barely beating New Horizons but like most Pokemon games its legs were cut short with the release of third version. Waiting for Splatoon 3 and Pokemon Scarlet / Violet, these are the fastest seliing games in Japan (first 2 quarters + lifetime sales).
I can’t believe it is this hard to understand. The Detective Pikachu movie on the other hand is trying to build upon their multimedia dominance. It is trying to establish what Marvel & Pokémon have going on. That’s what the Mario movie is trying to establish. Before the Switch you could point to plenty of games headlining Mario not reaching 10 mil so honestly who cares.
You keep focusing on the games but when your brand encompasses literally everything else surrounding the games: merch, cards, crossovers, multimedia efforts, appearances in non-gaming related events it becomes laughable to bring up selling 20 mil. That brand is still going & has reached places Mario hasn’t yet or is able too currently. Actively curate the most profitable & recognizable brand on the planet since the first game. Guess what Pikachu did, spearheading & becoming the face of Pokémon & TPC. Guess what happened they stopped doing multimedia after a botched movie & reigned themselves to only video games which prevented the household name from spreading & regressing it over the next three generations. Okay so Mario was a household name & did multimedia before Pikachu.

I hope this clears things up, but feel free to bring the topic to the moderation thread if you feel differently. The fact that said trailer was removed also show how other publishers feel about all of this. In Valve's case, promoting an emulator can be an honest mistake but it is clear that the device gained a lot of popularity thanks to its emulation features.

There are multiple examples in the past where piracy killed a software environement and led to the cancellation of games (and more). However emulators can be used by people to freely play premium games. We are a Sales forum, meaning we should be looking at this from a sales perspective.Įmulation isn't equal to piracy. Everyone has their own opinion on the topic and I don't believe this is the place to convince other people to change their mind. The moral question is irrelevant to IB talk. Okay since the discussion is pretty long, here's my take and the place of this debate on IB.
